We at Geek Fever Games are long term fans of 4X space games, such as the classics Master of Orion and Space Empires.  For the past few years we kept attempting to dive back into Space Empires, but the lack of stable TCP/IP play makes it generally inaccessible unless you leverage 3rd party Play By Web sites - even then, the administration to set up and effectively run a game is cumbersome.  In a space where current day options are limited, we moved on to other games such as Might & Magic Heroes 6 (and why exactly did they swap the order of those words?!) - a fantastic game in its own right, but the lack of simultaneous turns means this game requires a significant time investment (they attempted to add simultaneous play, but this "feature" only works until you meet up with another player in the game, at which time it flips back to traditional turn-based).

Fast-forward to the present - enter Endless Space!  This indie game has an incredible level of depth, though not quite as deep as Space Empires, and enjoys a beautiful 3D engine and fairly intuitive interface.  Combined with a very effective simultaneous turn system, this is by far the most accessible and enjoyable 4X space game available today!  It can be purchased on Steam for about $35 (base game plus expansion).  If you're a fan of this genre, you'll definitely want to check this one out!

What are your thoughts?  Are 4X games dead?  What game in this genre sates your appetite these days?  We look forward to your responses!!
